The Indy 500 is the ultimate test of speed and endurance. 350,000 fans pack the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to witness the spectacle. This year, 33 drivers will battle it out for the top spot.
The Starting Lineup
Robert Shwartzman, a rookie, snagged the pole position for Prema Racing. He’s the first newcomer to achieve this feat since 1983. Meanwhile, last year’s winner, Josef Newgarden, struggled with penalties and landed in 32nd place.
Takuma Sato, a former F1 driver, showed his experience and secured the second spot. Pato O’Ward, who narrowly missed winning in 2022 and 2024, came in third.
Pato’s Lucky Charm
Pato O’Ward is pulling out all the stops. He’s designed a helmet featuring the Aztec symbol Cipactli. It’s a mythical sea monster with a mouth on each part of its body. The creature was “sacrificed” to create the heavens and hell. O’Ward says if he wins, he’ll wear the symbol on his helmet for the rest of his career.
In a recent tweet, Macronews showcased Pato’s helmet design, saying, “Mexican driver Pato O’Ward reveals his helmet for the Indy 500 with an impressive Aztec beast design.”

After a heartbreaking loss last year, Pato is more determined than ever. He’s drawing on his Mexican heritage for inspiration.
A Tradition Like No Other
Winners of the Indy 500 don’t spray champagne; they drink milk. This tradition started in 1936 when Louis Meyer asked for a glass of buttermilk after his victory. The American Dairy Industry Association liked the idea and decided to award $400 to the winner if they drank milk on the podium.
Robert Shwartzman joked that to win, you need to “buy a cow and milk it!”
Only one driver has achieved the Triple Crown: Graham Hill, who won the Indy 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Monaco Grand Prix. On May 30th, 1966, Graham Hill won the Indy 500.
This year’s Indy 500 will be a battle for the ages, with drivers vying for a piece of history. Will Pato O’Ward’s lucky charm bring him victory? Only time will tell.
Trivia
- The Indy 500 track is a 2.5-mile oval.
- The winner’s average speed is around 350 km/h.
- The circuit has remained largely unchanged since 1909.
As the green flag waves, 33 drivers will put everything on the line. Who will emerge victorious? One thing’s for sure – it won’t be easy. The stakes are high, and the reward is worth it: a place in the history books and a cold glass of milk.
