The 68th Annual Grammy Awards nominations have been unveiled. Indian and Indian-origin artists have secured multiple nominations, showcasing a strong presence on the global music stage. The prestigious awards recognize excellence across various musical genres.
Sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar received her eleventh career Grammy nomination. Her song ‘Debreak’ is nominated for Best Global Performance. Shankar continues her family’s musical legacy with this recognition.
She is the daughter of legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. Shankar is celebrated for her innovative blend of traditional Indian music and contemporary styles. Her first Grammy nomination was in 2003 for her album ‘Live at Carnegie Hall’.
The Indian music group Shakti also earned a nomination for ‘Shakti: Mind Explosion’ (50th Anniversary Tour Live). This album is recognized in the Best Global Music Album category. The group, led by John McLaughlin and the late Zakir Hussain, celebrates 50 years of jazz-fusion.
Shakti’s ‘Shrinij’s Dream (Live)’ is additionally nominated for Best Global Music Performance. This places them alongside Anoushka Shankar in that competitive category. Musician Siddhant Bhatia is nominated for ‘Sounds of Kumbh’. This collaborative work, inspired by the soundscapes of the Kumbh Mela, is also up for Best Global Music Album.
Indian-American pianist and composer Charu Suri received a nomination for her album ‘Shayaan’. It is recognized in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category. Suri’s album features a distinctive fusion of jazz and Indian music.
Suri also contributed as a producer to Siddhant Bhatia’s nominated album, ‘Sounds of Kumbh’.
