India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, just opened the world’s highest rail bridge in Kashmir. The Chenab Bridge cost around $160 million to build. It’s 1,315 meters long and 359 meters high – taller than the Eiffel Tower.
This bridge is part of a big project to connect Kashmir to the rest of India by rail. Modi’s government wants to bring Kashmir closer to the rest of the country.
The bridge opening happened after a recent attack on tourists in Kashmir. This led to a brief military clash between India and Pakistan.
Kashmir is a disputed area between India, Pakistan, and China. The region has a lot of military presence.
Since 2014, Modi’s government has been building roads and railways in remote areas. Projects like the Chenab Bridge are seen as symbols of national unity.
India took away Kashmir’s special status in 2019. This change allowed the central government to control the region directly.
While these projects are seen as successes, they also face criticism. Environmentalists warn that big construction projects in the Himalayas could harm the already fragile environment.
Some projects have had serious problems. A tunnel collapsed in November 2023, trapping workers for days.
Despite these issues, the Chenab Bridge is still seen as a major achievement for Modi’s government. It’s part of their plan to develop India into a fully developed country by 2047.
