India Misses Oscar as Dutch Film Wins Best Short Film Category

It’s no secret that the Oscars 2025 didn’t quite see the Indian flag waving high, with the Hindi language film “Anuja” narrowly missing out on the coveted award. Nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category, “Anuja” was pitted against some tough competition, including “A Lean,” “I Am Not a Robot,” “The Last Ranger,” and “The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent.” In the end, it was the Dutch film “I Am Not a Robot” that took home the Oscar, leaving “Anuja” and its team to ponder what could have been.

At the helm of “Anuja” is director Adam J. Graves, with Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga serving as executive producers. So, what’s the story behind this poignant film? “Anuja” revolves around the life of a 9-year-old girl named Anuja, who, along with her sister Palak, navigates the challenges of life. The film stars Sajda Pathan, Ananya Shanbhag, and Nagesh Bhonsle in key roles. Ananya Shanbhag plays the role of Palak, while Sajda Pathan brings Anuja to life on screen. The storyline delves into the complexities of their sisterly bond, as they work together in a clothing factory. Anuja is torn between pursuing her education and continuing to work in the factory, all while being presented with an opportunity to attend a boarding school – a decision that could potentially change her life forever.

But who is the talented Sajda Pathan, the young actress who plays Anuja? Her story is one of resilience and triumph. A former child laborer, Sajda was rescued by the NGO “Salam Baalak Trust,” which was founded by the family of renowned director Mira Nair. The organization, dedicated to supporting underprivileged children in Delhi-NCR, not only rescued Sajda but also provided her with the opportunity to pursue her education. As fate would have it, Sajda’s association with “Anuja” marked her entry into the world of acting. Interestingly, she had previously appeared in the 2023 feature film “The Bread,” a fact not many are aware of.

Despite missing out on the Oscar, “Anuja” has garnered significant recognition for its promising storyline, winning several awards along the way. The film took home the Best Live Action Short award at the HollyShorts Film Festival and was also named the Audience Award Short Film at the Montclair Film Festival in October 2024. With Netflix as its OTT streaming partner, “Anuja” continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, leaving a lasting impact on all who watch it. As the dust settles on the Oscars 2025, “Anuja” remains a testament to the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on our lives.
