The Karnataka government has banned female students from wearing hijab in Class X examinations starting today.
The Karnataka government has also banned hijab during examinations in private schools in the state. In this regard, the state government has issued an order that the students appearing for the 10th class board examinations starting from today must come in prescribed uniforms.
The order stipulates that students in public schools must wear the same uniform as the state government has prescribed, while students in private schools must wear uniforms prescribed by the administration of their respective schools. Applicable to both accredited and unsupported schools.
It may be recalled that Sada Ramya, Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, had recently spoken in support of the hijab and said that female students should be allowed to wear uniform colored dupatta inside the school. What is wrong with Muslim girls covering their heads with dupatta?
Following the statement, the government issued the circular on Friday with the signature of V Srinivas Murthy, Under Secretary, Department of Primary and Secondary Education, Karnataka. It also cites the Karnataka government’s previous order of February 5, which banned the wearing of hijab in schools.
