India Faces Key Questions Ahead of England Test Series

The stage is set for a thrilling Test series between India and England, with the first match scheduled to start on June 20. Both teams have announced their squads, and fans are eager to know how the Indian team will fill the void left by the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket. With Shubman Gill taking over as the Test captain, the question on everyone’s mind is: who will open the innings?

Gill has experience batting at number three, but with Rohit and Kohli gone, he might be asked to open or take Kohli’s spot at number four. His stats suggest he can excel in any role – 874 runs at an average of 32.37 as an opener, and 1,019 runs at 37.74 batting at number three. The decision will be crucial in shaping India’s batting lineup.

Another pressing question is: who will replace Kohli at number four? Kohli’s record at this position is staggering – 7,564 runs at an average of 50.09. KL Rahul, Gill, and Karun Nair are all in contention to fill this slot. Nair, who recently scored 204 against England Lions, is a strong candidate. However, Kohli’s shoes are big to fill, and the chosen player will have to perform exceptionally well to match his predecessor’s standards.

There’s also uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in all five Tests. His unorthodox bowling action makes him prone to injuries, and managing his workload will be key. Coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted that a decision is yet to be made on Bumrah’s schedule, but with Mohammad Shami not in the team, Bumrah’s presence in the playing XI is almost mandatory.

These questions will be answered as the series unfolds, but one thing’s for sure – the upcoming Test series between India and England will be an exciting and closely contested affair.
