India: 100 years after the death of Akbar Allahabadi renamed

After the city of Allahabad in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was renamed as Prayag Raj, the name of the famous Urdu poet Akbar Allahabadi was changed to Akbar Prayag Raj 100 years after his death.

Citing poets and writers belonging to the city, the website said, “Apart from Hindi literature, Persian and Urdu literature are also studied in the city. Akbar Prayag Raj is a well-known Urdu poet.”

In addition, Akbar Allahabadi is not only the only city whose pen name or the name by which it is known has been changed, but also all the judges and poets who have used Allahabadi in the name on the UPHESC website. The names of were changed to ‘Prayag Raj’.

Apart from Akbar Allahabadi, the poets whose names have been changed include Rashid Allahabadi and Tekh Allahabadi and their names have now been changed to ‘Rashid Prayag Raj’ and ‘Tekh Prayag Raj’.

In this regard, when contacted, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Dinesh Sharma said that he was not aware of these changes and that UPHESC was an independent body.

“I will talk to the UPHESC officials in this regard as it is an independent body,” he said.

The name change caused a stir on social media and people sharply criticized the Uttar Pradesh government.

One Twitter user described it as “extreme stupidity” and another said it was an attempt to “rewrite history.”

Historians have also criticized the UP government over the move, but Allahabad University professor Hiramba Chatterjee said, “This is a low-key act. Fools should be forgiven.”

The professor also said that changing the pen names of famous poets shows that “the authorities have little understanding of history”.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Rita Bahugana Joshi, who is also a professor of history at Allahabad University, sought to end the issue by saying, “It could be a mistake because someone’s pen name is a Can’t change
