As well as winning the three-match test series against India, a special record has also been registered in the name of South Africa. They became the first Test cricket team not to score 250 runs in a single innings in a series of three or more Test matches, but went on to win the series.
In the Freedom Series that concluded against India, South Africa’s highest score in an innings was 243/3, which they achieved while chasing in the fourth inning of the Johannesburg Test. In the first test held at Centurion, South Africa’s score was 197 in the first innings and 191 in the second innings. In the second Test (Johannesburg Test), South Africa scored 229 and 243 runs in both innings respectively. South Africa’s score fell short of 250 even in the last decisive test (Cape Town Test). Proteas scored 210 runs in the first inning and 212 runs in the second inning. In this way, throughout this series, the South African team could not touch the figure of 250 in any inning.
So far there have been 423 series in Test cricket, in which 3 or more matches have been played. The highest score in South Africa’s three-match Test series victory against India was 243/3 before New Zealand’s name was the record for winning the series with the lowest-highest score in three or more series test. In 1969, New Zealand’s highest score in an innings in the entire series against Pakistan was only 274 runs, but New Zealand went on to win the series.
