In Europe, 572 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children have already been reported.

In Europe, and until November 24, 2022, there have been reports 572 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children under 16 from 22 countriesaccording to the latest report published by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).

Specifically, 54 have been reported in Spain, six in Austria, 14 in Belgium, three in Bulgaria, two in Cyprus, eight in Denmark, one in Finland, 10 in France, 21 in Greece, 29 in Ireland, five in Israel, 50 in Italy, one in Latvia, one in Luxembourg, 16 in the Netherlands, six in Norway, 23 in Poland, 28 in Portugal, one in the Republic of Moldova, one in Serbia, 12 in Sweden and 280 in the United Kingdom.

Also, since the last surveillance bulletin, which used data as of October 27, 2022, 10 new cases have been reported in five countries (Bulgaria (two), Greece (two), Italy (three), Poland (one ) and Portugal (two)). One previously reported case (Greece) was not included in the latest data update.

The majority (75.5%) of cases are five years old or younger. In this sense, ECDC has reported that of the 572 probable cases, 405 have information available on the clinical outcome. There have been seven deaths associated with the disease in the European Region.

In total, 457 cases were tested for adenovirus by any type of specimen and had a valid positive or negative result. Of them, 236 (51.6%) were positive. The positivity rate was highest in whole blood samples (49.3%).

Likewise, of the 392 cases submitted to PCR tests for SARS-CoV-2, 40 (10.2%) were positive. Serology results for SARS-CoV-2 are only available for 115 cases, of which 73 (63.5%) were positive. Of the 167 cases with data on vaccination against COVID-19, 148 (88.6%) were not vaccinated.
