In China, couples were allowed to have countless children

The Chinese province of Sichuan allows couples to have unlimited children.

China’s population declined last year for the first time in 60 years, as the country struggles to contain its declining population.

As part of a policy change in Sichuan, unmarried couples will now be able to have children, while single women were previously barred from registering births.

According to officials, the national one-child policy was changed to three in 2016, but the changes that began in 2016 failed to stem the decline in birth rates, and China had more deaths than births for the first time last year.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made increasing the birth rate his priority. The government has also taken steps to reverse or slow down the falling rates, such as tax breaks and provision of better maternity facilities.

Japan is also facing a declining birth rate. Japan’s prime minister says his country is on the brink of not being able to function as a society as a result.
