Avantiika Malik, ex-wife of actor Imran Khan, recently opened up about their divorce in an interview with Jenice Sequeira. She said that while divorce isn’t the worst thing in the world, she initially thought she’d never survive without Imran.
Avantiika shared that she felt lost and financially dependent during their separation. “I didn’t even know how to book a flight ticket on my own,” she admitted. Despite coming from a privileged background, she was scared about her future.
A Family History of Divorce
Avantiika’s parents are also divorced, which made it easier for her to discuss her own experience. “I’ve always been proud of my mom,” she said. “It’s not something I’m ashamed of.” The couple decided to take a break before finalizing their divorce, a process that took time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Long-Term Relationship
Avantiika and Imran met when they were 19 and were together for a long time. “When you’re with someone for so long, you become dependent on them,” she explained. Avantiika felt like she’d lost her identity after the breakup. She also believes that men often struggle more with divorce.
Coping with Their Daughter’s Questions
Their daughter, Imara, had many questions after the divorce. “She asked if this meant she’d get a new mom,” Avantiika recalled. Avantiika reassured her that she’d always be there for her. Imara now splits her time between both parents.
In the interview, Avantiika also mentioned that she felt like she’d disappointed everyone around her. Despite the challenges, she’s trying to move forward and co-parent Imara with Imran.
