IMD Issues 4-Day Heavy Rain Alert For Karnataka And Bengaluru

The India Meteorological Department has issued a four-day heavy rain and thunderstorm warning for Karnataka, remaining active through March 21, 2026. The alert follows a sudden shift in regional weather patterns that has already resulted in one lightning-related fatality involving a young boy in the Koppal district.

While the precipitation offers temporary relief from intense summer temperatures, the sudden weather shift presents immediate public safety risks. Official meteorological data confirms the unseasonal summer rainfall is being driven by an upper-air cyclonic circulation stretching from Maharashtra down to Tamil Nadu.

Understanding The Cyclonic Circulation

A persistent lower-tropospheric trough is currently running directly across Interior Karnataka at an altitude of 0.9 kilometers above mean sea level. This system is drawing significant moisture into the peninsula, generating scattered light-to-moderate rainfall.

The atmospheric instability is producing gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Tracking these rapid atmospheric changes highlights the critical role of meteorological science in predicting severe pre-monsoon weather events across Southern India. The same cyclonic system is currently bringing similar conditions to neighboring regions, including Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

District Forecasts And Bengaluru Outlook

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is forecasted for 11 specific districts across the state. The affected regions include Kalaburagi, Koppal, Vijayapura, Davangere, Bidar, Chikkamagaluru, Ballari, Vijayanagara, Raichur, Mysuru, and Chamarajanagar.

In Bengaluru, residents are experiencing an overcast buildup that is expected to continue. The state capital is projected to receive light to moderate showers over the next four days. Maximum temperatures in Bengaluru are expected to hover between 30°C and 33°C during this period.

The rainfall follows a period of intense heat across the state, with Kalaburagi recently recording a maximum temperature of 38.7°C. Local agricultural communities are currently assessing the fields, expressing concern over potential crop damage resulting from the untimely downpours.
