"If you don’t like Netflix content, leave!" : Netflix’s message to its employees

If you’ve never worked for an American company, you wouldn’t know how important corporate culture is. At Netflix, it is just as important, summarized in written guidelines to which all employees must adhere, and which were probably updated on Thursday, May 12, reports the wall street journal Friday, May 13. The management chose to add a new section there, entitled “artistic expression”, which could be summarized as follows: “Be prepared to work on content with which you are not going to agree. And if you don’t like not that, you can quit.”

The new section details how the company offers eclectic programs aimed at very different audiences. “We let the viewers decide what is appropriate for them”, “even if we find certain titles contrary to our personal values”, is it now written. “Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles that you perceive to be harmful,” Netflix says. “If you find it hard to sustain the variety of our content, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” it added. A first, since until now, this corporate culture memo intended for employees did not address this question of personal ethics and the content offered by the platform.

Last year, Netflix was criticized for supporting comedian Dave Chappelle, whose show The Closer, available on the streaming platform, was deemed transphobic by the LGBTQIA+ community. Despite a demonstration in front of its premises, and a walkout by some of its employees, the world leader in streaming had chosen to maintain the in its offer. According to a spokesperson for the company whose remarks are relayed by the Wall Street Journal, the employees were able to discuss these new directives upstream for several months before a version was finally adopted. From now on, it imposes itself well on its last.
