Iceta: "Paralympians put everything, society should put more"

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, stressed that the Spanish athletes present at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo have made “a gift” to Spain, “a country that needed good news and successes”, and made it clear that since they put “everything”, the rest of society “should put more.”

“We are here to celebrate a success, an effort and an iron will that is what you show every day. You have given us a gift because a country that has spent more than a year and a half hard needed good news, successes and, above all , of that force that permeates and overwhelms us all, “Iceta said at the reception this Monday night at the Paralympic House in Spain to the Spanish expedition that returned from Tokyo.

The politician confessed that he had not seen “such an impressive thing” as what he was able to experience first-hand in Tokyo, where he spent the last days, and withdrew that “all the awards are logically deserved, but when one starts from an added difficulty of which society is sometimes not aware, his merit is always greater and his recognition must be greater”.

Iceta thanked the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) for “dressing” the team’s kit and for having mediated so that he could deliver medals after the marathons. “They are unforgettable moments that reconcile us with the best of people, with their hopes and dreams,” he stressed.

Finally, he referred to the words of Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee (ICC), at the Closing Ceremony and endorsed them. “We ask, demand and offer visibility. Society must be aware of diversity and the need to support each one according to their needs and capacities. Accessibility, because our urban planning is still not fully accessible, and opportunities to make dreams come true. You put everything, the rest of us should put something else, “he said.

For her part, the minister of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, was also present at the event, who first remembered Teresa Perales, that she could not return with the team after suffering a picture of stress and anxiety on the night of Saturday to Sunday and that she is admitted to a hospital in Tokyo. “She embodies some of the worst consequences of what all of you live, a demand and an effort and sacrifice superhuman for which I wanted to give you my deepest affection, “he said.

“You have represented the best of our country and it is not just about the medals, which are an enormous source of pride, but about the message you send to our country and to the international community as a whole, that diversity is our greatest strength. It is this diverse Spain that works as a team that excites us and for which it is worth fighting, “he warned.

Belarra recalled that they are “working intensely” with the CPE because they have “understood that sport and its practice must be conceived from and for people with disabilities.” “We are working to remove any type of obstacle that hinders sports practice because sport is an ally of inclusion and we want to change from an individualistic approach to that of collective rights,” he said.

“You are superheroes and superheroines and we aspire as a ministry so that people with disabilities who play sports can find well-being, health and leisure and that it has the support of public institutions to do so with full guarantees, “he added, asking” to continue promoting women’s sports at all levels and on an equal footing. “

The minister described Spain as a “power and example” in Paralympic sport and he called on the media to put sports with disabilities “on their daily agenda”. “You are the mirror in which we look at ourselves every day,” he said.

Carballeda: “Teresa Perales is very well attended”

Finally, Miguel Carballeda, president of the CPE, believes that Paralympic athletes deserve “to collect in the backpack and especially in the heart this applause of society Spanish “and took the opportunity to thank the Government and the sponsors.

“Without them we could not do this or bring ourselves 36 medals and 181 diplomas. It is becoming more and more difficult, but there they are sending a message to society that in such difficult times that it can be done when we play as a team, “he said.

The leader regretted that “sometimes” people are “excessively critical of many things” in Spain when there are things to be “proud of” like people with disabilities who “have it worse and try to give the best of themselves and add”.

Carballeda celebrated that they have gone and returned to the Games with “another gold medal” such as not having any positive because “there is nothing more important than people” and confirmed that Teresa Perales is “very well cared for” in Tokyo, where she is accompanied by the medical staff of the CPE: “We will bring her in a short time, when the doctors advise it, to continue treating her here. Hopefully I can be in Asturias collecting a well-deserved award for her and for sports with disabilities, “he concluded.
