ICC Fines Pakistan Team 5% Match Fee for Slow Over Rate Before India Match

The Pakistani cricket team is facing a setback ahead of their highly anticipated match against India, scheduled to take place on February 23 at the Dubai grounds. Following their crushing 60-run defeat against New Zealand in the first match of the Champions Trophy 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined the team. The fine, which amounts to 5% of the match fees, was imposed due to the team’s failure to maintain a slow over rate during the match against New Zealand.

Slow Over Rate Costs Pakistan

The ICC stated in a press release that Pakistan was found guilty of bowling one over short of the stipulated time. Field umpires Richard Illingworth and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Joel Wilson, and TV umpire Alex Wharf made the allegations, which led to the imposition of the fine by match referee Andy Pycroft. Notably, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan accepted the charges, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan Accepts Responsibility

According to Rule 2.22, players are fined 5% of their match fees for failing to bowl the required number of overs within the stipulated time. This rule applies to both players and support staff. The Champions Trophy 2025 marks the first time Pakistan has hosted an ICC tournament since 1996, with matches being held in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

Pakistani Batsmen Disappoint

In their first match, New Zealand set a target of 321 runs for Pakistan to win, but the Pakistani batsmen failed to deliver. The team was bowled out for just 260 runs, with Babar Azam scoring 64 runs and Khushdil Shah contributing 69 runs. Despite these efforts, the team was unable to secure a win. Haris Rauf proved to be the most expensive bowler for Pakistan, conceding 83 runs in 10 overs and taking only two wickets.
