“I thought we had overtaken Rohit-Virat but…” Former cricketer on giants’ return to T20

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of the T20 series starting against Afghanistan. After over a year, both have returned to the T20 squad. This decision was made with the T20 World Cup in mind. Most cricket experts say that this decision by the Indian selectors is right, but there are some experts who are critical of this decision. It also includes the name of former cricketer Deep Dasgupta. He termed the return of these two star players to the T20 squad as a directionless decision by the Indian selectors.

Speaking to Star Sports, Deep Dasgupta said, “I thought the Indian team had overtaken Rohit and Virat.” The most critical thing was the lack of effort from the senior players in the last T20 World Cup. But now they have another chance.

Deep Das says: “First, you need to pay attention to what kind of pitches you get in West Indies and USA.” What kind of track do you expect – a 200 score or a 160 score? To be honest, I don't understand the direction of the Indian team here. If they had to go back to Rohit and Virat, then what was the point of the T20 squad being selected last year? It's like accepting this and going back to step one.

Deep Dasgupta says that given the current selection, it looks like Team India's core squad will remain the same that lost the semi-final against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He also feels that in such a situation, it will be difficult for an excellent finisher like Rinku Singh to get a chance in the playing XI. Deep Dasgupta says there should have been some direction in the selection of India's T20 squad at this point. He also said that with the T20 World Cup in mind, the strategic approach should have been clear.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not played a single T20 match at the international level since the last T20 World Cup. Until their names were announced for the Afghanistan series, there were speculations that these two greats will now be restricted to Test and ODI only and will not be a part of the T20 World Cup. But the selectors have put an end to all such speculations.
