Hypersonic missile firing in North Korea: an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council

After North Korea announced a successful firing of a hypersonic glider missile, France, the United Kingdom and the United States called for an emergency session of the Security Council to be held. UN.

This meeting will be held this Thursday, September 30, 2021 behind closed doors. This request from Paris, London and Washington is the first joint diplomatic act of the three countries since the Australian submarine crisis which deeply affected Franco-American-British relations.

The initiative for the emergency meeting came after North Korea’s announcement on Wednesday in which the Pyongyang government said it had successfully tested the launch of a hypersonic missile.

The announcement of the shooting was followed by the speech of the North Korean ambassador to the UN. Kim Song said it was “a legitimate right” for North Korea to “strengthen its defense capabilities”.

Hypersonic missiles are a major technological advance. These are much faster than ballistic or cruise missiles and are more difficult to detect and intercept, making them a formidable weapon. For several years, the United States has invested heavily in improving its defense systems, particularly anti-missile defense systems.

Before launching a trilateral request with France and the United Kingdom, Washington had extended its hand to North Korea by announcing that it had “no hostile intentions”. This call for dialogue was rejected by Kim Jong-un. The North Korean leader considered that this desire for dialogue of the Americans was only a “facade”.

In 2019, the Hanoi summit, which brought together Kim Jong-un and then US President Donald Trump, led to the collapse of the talks, leaving the two countries at an impasse.
