Huawei is escalating its push into the high-end PC market, unveiling new tablets and foldable laptops that leverage its proprietary software and chip technology. The Chinese technology giant introduced its MatePad Edge 2-in-1 tablet and the premium MateBook Fold Extraordinary Master Edition.
The MatePad Edge is designed as a competitor to devices like Microsoft’s Surface tablets. It operates on Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5, also known as HarmonyOS Next 5, which supports full desktop-style applications.
The new tablet features a 14.2-inch OLED display with a resolution of 3,120 by 2,080 pixels and a 120 Hz refresh rate. It supports the Huawei M-Pencil Pro stylus.
Constructed from a single piece of metal, the MatePad Edge is 6.85 millimeters thin and weighs 789 grams (1.74 pounds). Its hinge allows the screen to open up to 175 degrees.
Under the hood, the MatePad Edge is powered by a Kirin X90 or X90A chipset, paired with 16 to 32 GB of RAM and 256 GB to 2 TB of storage. Huawei asserts that its new chip offers performance comparable to Apple’s M5 silicon and is 3.8 times faster than its previous Kirin T92 chipset.
The MatePad Edge includes advanced cooling with liquid dissipation and dual heat vents. It offers an optional keyboard with a 1.8-millimeter key travel and a smart pressure-sensitive touchpad.
Connectivity options include one USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, while imaging is handled by a 50-megapixel main rear camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. A substantial 12,900 mAh battery supports 140 W fast charging.
The MatePad Edge is available in Space Gray and Bright Moon Silver. Pricing starts at approximately $830 for the 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage model, ranging up to about $1,800 for the top-tier 32 GB RAM and 2 TB storage configuration.
Huawei also launched its MateBook Fold Extraordinary Master Edition, a premium foldable laptop. This device is available in black and red, with a price point of around $3,736 for a 32 GB RAM and 2 TB storage version.
These new PC offerings were unveiled during an event in China that also saw the debut of Huawei’s Mate 80 series flagship smartphones and the Mate X7 foldable smartphone.
