Huawei Still Unable to Produce Chips Below 7nm

Huawei’s new smartphone, the Pura X, features a foldable screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. When it was first announced, the company didn’t reveal which chip it uses. But based on past models, Huawei often uses Kirin chips made by SMIC. So, it’s likely the Pura X has a similar chip.

Some foreign media outlets got to test the Huawei Pura X and found out it runs on the Kirin 9020 chip. This chip was designed by Huawei itself and launched in late 2024 with the Huawei Mate 70 series. It has an octa-core CPU with a large Taishan core.

Currently, Huawei is testing laser-induced plasma (LDP) technology to replace Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) for making advanced chips. However, Huawei and SMIC still can’t produce chips with technology better than 7nm (N+2).
