Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, has been on a remarkable journey to reclaim its place in the chip market. After facing tough restrictions, the company is pushing forward with impressive speed. Their latest efforts hint at a major leap in smartphone processing power.
Just last month, in June 2025, Huawei launched its Pura 80 premium smartphones. These phones featured the Kirin 9020 chipset, which first appeared in November 2024. This chip uses 7-nanometer technology and packs an 8-core CPU, reaching speeds up to 2.5 GHz. Huawei stated that the Kirin 9020 offers a 36% performance boost over the Kirin 9010. That earlier chip debuted in April 2024, powering the Pura 70 series.
Now, reports suggest Huawei is fast-tracking its next top-tier chip, the Kirin 9030. This new powerhouse is expected to arrive alongside the Mate 80 flagship phone series in late 2025. An unnamed source, quoted by Huawei Central, claims the Kirin 9030 could be 20% faster than the current Kirin 9020.
A Return to Independence
While exact numbers are still a rumor, this marks a big step for Huawei. The company first introduced its Kirin 9000s chip in 2023. That chip was special because Huawei designed and developed it entirely on its own, without relying on U.S. technology. It also used a 7-nanometer production process and hit speeds of 2.62 GHz. If the Kirin 9030 truly delivers on its promise, it might be 50 to 60% faster than that groundbreaking Kirin 9000s.
Chinese tech insider Digital Chat Station added to the buzz. They reported that Huawei is secretly working on four new flagship chips. One of these is set to launch in late 2025, and many believe it’s the Kirin 9030.
Beyond Smartphones
The ambitions don’t stop at phones. Other international reports suggest Huawei is gearing up to make its Kirin X90 chip for personal computers. This PC chip will reportedly use Huawei’s own 5-nanometer manufacturing technology. This advanced process might also be used for future chips, including the upcoming Kirin 9030.
These moves show Huawei’s strong resolve to compete head-on. They are challenging established players like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple in the ever-growing semiconductor market. Huawei seems determined to become a self-reliant force in the tech world once again.
