A single conversation can change everything. Imagine a world without Metal Gear Solid or Death Stranding. That’s a reality we almost faced, all because Hideo Kojima nearly chose a very different career path. He says a chat with a human resources manager redirected his entire life.
Kojima recently shared his unusual journey in an interview with the Japanese website ananweb. He explained how a single, surprising exchange became the crucial moment that shaped his future. Without it, the video game legend we know today might have quietly worked in a pharmacy.

Back then, Kojima was a fresh graduate from a humanities program at a mid-tier university. He didn’t have much club experience or time studying overseas. Finding a job in Japan at that time was tough. Many graduates spent years looking for work, and Kojima was no different.
He had actually given up his dream of becoming an artist. He wanted to get into a big company. The desire to do creative work was still there. However, many life events, including the death of his father, sadly pushed that dream aside.
Plenty of companies turned down Kojima’s applications. They often did this because he didn’t come from a top-ranked university. He even recalled some interviewers laughing when he mentioned writing novels. This endless job hunt made him feel like an old-school private detective trying to solve a crime.

Kojima’s parents were pharmacists, so he knew that world well. He started applying for jobs in the pharmaceutical field. One day, he interviewed at a company that made medical devices. During this interview, all the stress from his long job search spilled out. He honestly told them he felt pressured and wanted to work in a creative area.
To his surprise, the HR manager supported him. The manager actually told him to chase his true dreams. This advice completely shocked Kojima and became a huge turning point. He believes if that day hadn’t happened, he would be a quiet pharmacist somewhere now.

After that impactful meeting, Kojima changed course. He started applying for jobs in toys and games with renewed vigor. He felt free to speak openly about his passions and what he had done. He talked about his novels and other creative projects. Eventually, he landed a job at Konami, where he made history in the video game industry.
Kojima reflects on how things changed for him. "Two years after I became a working adult, I found myself listening to the lies of students applying for jobs," he said. "The people doing the interviewing were also liars. They represented the company, not themselves. A job interview is when the lies from both sides meet. That’s what a job interview truly is."

He added, "But I am not a liar, and I don’t represent the company. I talk to every student honestly. I even give advice to those who aren’t a good fit for the job. I do this just like that HR manager did for me, whose name I unfortunately can’t remember." It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can spark monumental careers.
