How to get outdoor temperature alerts on your iPhone or Android

The outside temperature is something that worries most of us, and many of us consult the Weather app on our smartphone from time to time.

Although, There are times when it is preferable to receive an alert when a certain temperature is reached outside.

In summer, you can keep your house cooler by opening the windows, but when it’s too hot outside, you might want to close them and turn on the air conditioning. In winter it can be helpful to be alerted when freezing temperatures are reached.

The service we will use to receive these alerts is IFTTT (If This Then That).

This is a very popular service that has been around for a long time and allows up to 3 free automations. You can easily create simple logic, as the name suggests. In this case, let’s “IF the temperature goes above / below X°C, THEN send me an alert.”

First, go to the IFTTT website and sign up for a free account. You can quickly sign up with an Apple, Google or Facebook account, or you can use an email address.

After logging in, select “Create” on the IFTTT homepage. The first part to be created is the “If This” trigger.

Select the “Add” button, search for “Weather” and select the “Underground Weather” service.

Now, depending on what you want to do, select the “Current temperature drops below” or “Current temperature rises above” trigger.

This is where you can enter the desired temperature, choose the units and enter your location. Select “Create Activation” when done.

There are many different ways to receive this alert. One of the most comfortable is through the IFTTT app, which you must install (ios | Android) on your own Android or iOS smartphone.

Search for “notification” and click on the “Notifications” service.

You can then choose the notification type. For our case, a simple notification is enough, so click on the box on the left.

In the next step you will see the message you will receive in the notification and will have the possibility to customize it to your liking. Fields with a gray background are variables that will be replaced by the value that applies when you receive the notification.

After clicking on «Create action», it remains to review the automation and click on «Continue»

The last step is to name the automation (applet in the IFTTT nomenclature) and click “Finish”

That is all. You will receive a notification when the temperature reaches the number you entered.
