The cyclist Alfonso Cabello has achieved the first gold medal for Spain in the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in the track cycling kilometer time trial in category C4-5. It is the third medal for the Spanish delegation so far in the Games after the silver achieved in swimming by Miguel Luque and Toni Ponce.
This success not only brings Cabello a new Olympic medal after being champion of the kilometer time trial in category C4-5 at the London 2012 Olympic Games and bronze at Rio 2016 (It was also bronze in Rio in the 750-meter speed test in the C1-5 category), but it also represents an important economic prize.
With his gold medal, Alfonso Cabello will receive a prize of 70,000 euros. Earnings that are still far from the 94,000 euros that the Olympic champions have received Spaniards, but that doubles the amount that the Spanish Paralympic champions received at the Rio 2016 Games, when they received 30,000 for each gold medal (See all the prizes and more curiosities about the Paralympic event in our Guide to the Paralympic Games).
Much of the increase in this amount is due to the agreement reached by the Higher Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Spanish Paralympic Committee, For which the CSD has allocated 4.7 million euros to the COE and 1.9 million to the CPE to cover the costs of travel and prizes for Spanish athletes.
