How did Dhoni get a place in the Indian team? Former BCCI selector made a big reveal

Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a big name not only in India but also in the cricket world. Dhoni is the captain who has won the most ICC trophies for India. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, had a career spanning around 15 years. At the same time, former India international Syed Saba Karim revealed how Dhoni landed a place at Team India.

The former international opened up about whether there was a turning point in Dhoni’s career. This was revealed by Saba Karim at “Jio Cinema” in the comment box. Saba Karim met Dhoni after he became the selector of Ranji in Bihar, then Dhoni played Ranji from Bihar.

The former selector said: “My story is very interesting. When I met Dhoni he was in his second year at Ranji. He used to play for Bihar. I’ve seen him hit, and I remember when he hit, he had this great talent that we saw later: a spinner, or a quick thrower who throws big. Even the footwork that should have been there for wicketkeeping was a little lacking.

He added, “We worked on it with him back then and he still remembers well what he was taught back then.” Whenever we spoke, he would always talk about it. This was a turning point in MS’s career where he really took off. At ODIs, we let him open the innings because he was hitting hard and scoring fast.

Saba Karim went on to share how the national team selected Dhoni after the India A Tour. Said. “The second turning point was the triserie between India ‘A’, Pakistan ‘A’ and Kenya in Kenya. Dhoni was allowed to play because Dinesh Karthik joined the national team. Where Dhoni has done good wicketkeeping and isn’t asked for a bat! We played Pakistan A twice and they fought well in the series.

The former India international said: “From then on it was the turning point of his career and after that his name stayed in the news. I also remember that I was in Kolkata at the time and Sourav Ganguly was the captain. I wanted to meet him and tell him that there is a goalkeeper who should be included in the Indian team as he hit brilliantly and was a solid goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Sourav did not see MS play just before the Pakistan tour and was not selected for that tour.
