Honda Prelude Returns: Type-R Performance Meets Hybrid Efficiency

It’s rare for a car to try and be everything to everyone, but Honda’s new Prelude aims to do just that. This fall, we’ll see a unique blend hitting the market. It brings together the spirited driving feel of a Type-R with the smart, fuel-saving hybrid technology found in the Civic. Think of it as getting the best of both worlds in one sleek package.

Honda had hinted at the iconic Prelude’s return late last year. Over time, the company has played with the details, but the core idea stayed the same: a stylish coupé packed with clever tech. Famous automotive writer LJK Setright even praised its advanced features, like four-wheel steering. Now, the new model has finally been shown off before it reaches car dealerships.

The car’s overall shape is quite appealing. You might notice its front end looks a bit like the Toyota Prius. However, from other angles, the Prelude truly stands out. Its low and wide body shouts “sporty,” and specific design choices help it cut through the air efficiently. This means it moves smoothly and saves fuel.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine. This engine works with the same hybrid system as the Honda Civic. Together, they deliver a solid 200 horsepower and 315 Nm of torque. This setup is quite efficient, expected to get up to 50 miles per gallon (4.7 L/100 km). Honda will share the official EPA numbers closer to the car’s launch.

When it comes to handling, the Prelude borrows some serious parts from the Civic Type-R. It uses special dual-axis front struts and powerful Brembo brakes. These brakes kick in when the hybrid system’s own regenerative braking isn’t quite enough. The car also features adaptive shock absorbers and four different ways to drive. Plus, its S+ Shift system mimics a manual gearbox, offering quick shifts, smart engine revs, and a fun feel.

Beyond just how it drives, the Prelude is also packed with modern tech. It includes Honda Sensing, which is a suite of driver assistance features to help keep you safe. The infotainment system runs on Android Automotive, so it has Google services built right in. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easy smartphone connection.

What is Android Automotive?

Android Automotive is a special operating system from Google made just for cars. It’s different from Android Auto, which needs your smartphone connected.

Android Automotive lives right inside the car. It manages many things:

  • Entertainment (radio, music, Google Maps navigation, Spotify, etc.)
  • Connections (wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi)
  • Car features (climate control, driving settings, cameras, sensors)

Another key difference is that Android Automotive can update itself over the internet. It also has its own Google Play app store, designed for driving.

The Prelude’s stance is unmistakably athletic. With a wheelbase of 2,606 millimeters, a total length of 4,532 millimeters, a width of 1,880 millimeters, and a height of just 1,356 millimeters, the coupé appears low and wide. Its proportions are highlighted by the “double-bubble” style roof, wide fender flares, and full-width taillights.

The official price won’t be out until closer to the launch. However, the 2026 Prelude is expected to start somewhere between $38,000 and $40,000. For those in Europe, taxes would naturally increase that price. If we factor in a 10% customs duty and a 23% VAT, the price could land between €44,100 and €46,500. Keep in mind, this is just an estimate. The final retail price will depend on Honda’s specific plans for different European markets.
