The air was thick with anticipation. Fans in Chennai were all set for a glimpse into the magical world of ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’. A special promotional event for Rishab Shetty’s upcoming film was planned for Tuesday. However, the cheer turned to solemnity as the event was suddenly called off.
The team behind ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ made this difficult choice out of respect. A terrible stampede recently happened in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The filmmakers felt it was not the right time for celebration.
A Statement of Empathy
Hombale Films, the production house, shared the news on their Instagram page on Monday. They explained their decision clearly. “Considering the recent tragic incident,” their statement read, “we’ve decided to cancel tomorrow’s ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ promotional event in Chennai.”
They emphasized that it was a moment for deep thought. They expressed heartfelt sympathy for the families affected by the tragedy. “Our condolences and prayers are with all the affected families,” they stated. The production house also thanked everyone for their understanding and support. They promised to meet their audience in Tamil Nadu at a more suitable time in the future.
The Karur Tragedy
The devastating stampede took place on the evening of September 27th in Karur. It happened during a political rally organized by the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party. The incident resulted in a heartbreaking loss of 41 lives. Among the victims were 18 women, 13 men, 5 girls, and 5 boys.
Following the tragedy, TVK chief Vijay held a video conference with senior leaders. He quickly announced financial help for the victims’ families. Each family of a deceased person would receive 20 lakh rupees. Injured individuals would get 2 lakh rupees in aid. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, also stepped in. He announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees for each deceased family. People undergoing treatment would receive 1 lakh rupees.
