Rasmus Hojlund was a huge signing for Manchester United. They brought him in from Atalanta for a whopping 77.8 million euros in the 2023/24 season. That made him one of the most expensive players the club ever bought. Now, before he even starts his third year as a Red Devil, it looks like the 22-year-old Danish striker is heading to AC Milan.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for United fans, especially considering the massive investment. Hojlund arrived with high hopes. He was supposed to be the main man upfront, but football can change quickly. It certainly has for him at Old Trafford.
With new faces like Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko joining the team, Hojlund’s position changed fast. Sesko’s arrival, confirmed just this Saturday, pushed Hojlund down the pecking order. He went from being the first-choice striker to the third. A player who cost so much money naturally wants to play. So, the number nine is now very much on his way out.
Ruben Amorim, the new coach, sent a clear message. Hojlund didn’t play a single minute in the friendly match against Fiorentina today at Old Trafford. Fabrizio Romano, the transfer news expert, believes this was the ultimate sign. He feels it shows United is ready to let Hojlund go.
According to Romano, the Nordic forward is set to boost AC Milan’s attack. He will link up with Rafael Leão there. The deal will likely be a temporary loan, lasting until the end of the season. However, there’s more to it. AC Milan will have the choice to buy Hojlund outright for 40 million euros.
The loan itself is said to cost Milan 6 million euros, with them covering his wages. If Milan makes the transfer permanent at the end of the 2025/26 season, Manchester United would receive a total of 46 million euros for Hojlund. This includes the initial loan fee and the purchase option. That means United stands to lose a considerable amount compared to what they paid for him back in 2023/24. It’s a significant financial hit on a player who was supposed to be a cornerstone for years to come.
