historical bronze

Rafael Lozano Jr. (18 years old) has made history. The Cordovan boxer has become the first Spaniard to win a medal in the World Youth Championships, which are being held in La Nucia, Alicante, taking home a historic bronze in the -48 kg. He secured the medal for Spain by defeating Thailand’s Thitiwat Phlongaurai in the quarterfinals in a bout that he performed very cleverly.

But he could not continue to expand the legacy. Lozano lost in the semifinals to Ronel Suyom of the Philippines by unanimous decision. The rival came out very offensive and the Spaniard took advantage of the contras. At the end of the round, Lozano fell to the ground with a right hand. The next round was more even. The Cordovan boxer was looking for a comeback and went for it all. He landed some hard left hands and managed to lower Suyom’s intensity. The third round was for Lozano, who landed good hands making the Filipino have to hold on to him and landed a forceful left from above.

It was not enough to get the pass to the final and Ronel Suyom passed by unanimous decision. Spain still hasn’t managed to get any of its male or female boxers to compete in the final of a World Championship of any category. Despite this defeat, Lozano has won a medal in the competition, something historic that had not happened until now. The Cordovan, son of Rafael Lozano, double Olympic medalist in 1996 and 2000 and current national coach, was also the first Spanish boxer to win a gold medal in a lower category European Championships, in 2021.
