High school students return to school in Cuba after nine months of closure

Cuban high school students aged 16 to 18 returned to school on Monday, after nine months of closure and once vaccinated against the coronavirus, while younger students will do so in November. President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Minister of Education Ena Elsa Velazquez attended a ceremony for the occasion at a new high school in Havana.

Of the more than two million students in Cuba, only 84,500 have returned to face-to-face schooling, the others having to do so gradually by the end of November. Cuban establishments closed in January due to the sharp rise in Covid-19 cases. Due to the widespread lack of Internet access on the island, the lessons were continued remotely, via television, but the year’s program could not be completed.

48.7% of the population vaccinated according to the Ministry of Health

It must be done in the first months of resumption of face-to-face school, before being able to formally start the new school year. Cuba began immunizing children as young as two years old against the coronavirus in September, a condition set by the government to allow schools to reopen. The country of 11.2 million inhabitants had vaccinated, as of Saturday, 5.5 million people, or 48.7% of the population, according to the Ministry of Health. It accumulates 895,719 cases including 7,618 deaths.

The authorities hope to have vaccinated all Cubans by the end of the year. Last week, authorities in Havana announced the reopening of the beaches and swimming pools – the latter at 50% of their capacity – as well as the Malecon, the capital’s famous coastal boulevard and meeting place for all Havanese. A few days earlier, Cubans had already started to move closer to a return to normalcy, when eight of the country’s 15 provinces, including Havana, reopened restaurants, bars and other public places, with limited capacity. The country will open its doors to international tourism from November 15.
