Hideo Kojima Relieved as Death Stranding 2 Overcomes COVID-19 Challenges to Reach Completion

Hideo Kojima’s team faced a tough time making Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The COVID-19 pandemic hit just as they started working on it. Kojima had to work with his staff remotely, and character designer Yoji Shinkawa could only meet with him once a week. Despite the challenges, the team pulled together and got the job done.

The real struggle began in 2021 when they started filming motion capture scenes. Kojima couldn’t travel to the studios because of the pandemic, so he had to direct actors remotely using iPhones, iPads, and other smartphones. He described it as a crazy experience. Sony helped out by lending them equipment, but it was still tough. Many team members worked from home, which caused delays.

In an interview with IGN, Kojima said that the pandemic made it hard to keep the project on track, but the team’s unity and patience helped them push through. At one point, Kojima thought they might not finish the game, but they did. He’s relieved and happy about that.
