Here are 10 foods you shouldn’t put in the fridge

It is often thought that the best way to store food is to keep it in the refrigerator. But some products do not like cold. These are the foods that should not be kept in the refrigerator.

The starch in potatoes tends to turn into sugar more quickly under the effect of cold, which makes their texture grainy after cooking. To preserve them, they should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light (under the sink for example).

When it’s hot, we often have a reflex to put our candy bar in the fridge. However, contrary to popular belief, it is best in the closet. In fact, the cold will remove some of the aroma of the cocoa, but it will also cause a thin white film to appear on the surface of the chocolate, due to the lipids that rise to the surface.

When unopened, cantaloupe and watermelon are among the fruits that should be stored at room temperature and in a dry place. When placed in the refrigerator, they lose their flavor and antioxidant content.

You should avoid putting your tomatoes in your fridge’s famous “vegetable bucket” because cold air will not only stop the ripening process, but will also break down the cell walls of the fruit, altering its texture. It is best to store them in a salad bowl at room temperature.

Also on the list of foods not to cool are garlic and onion. When they are in the fridge, they go soft very quickly. Also, garlic tends to sprout and the pods can become more rubbery. As with potatoes, it is advisable to store them in a dark and dry place.

The cold tends to darken the flesh of the avocado more quickly. For it to mature, it is best to leave it outdoors. On the other hand, once cut, it can be put in the refrigerator, in a plastic box, and sprinkled with lemon juice to prevent it from turning black.

If pickles aren’t sold in the fresh produce section, there’s a reason. They keep very well out of the fridge thanks to the vinegar in which they are submerged.

Under the effect of cold and humidity, zucchini and aubergine tend to soften and become mealy. While they are not cooked, these delicate vegetables should be left out of the refrigerator, in a dry and cool place.

Honey is stored naturally thanks to its high sugar content. You have the right, therefore, to put it in the fridge, where it is likely to harden and crystallize. As with jam jars, their place is in the closet.
