Heavy rains in India and Nepal have killed 187 people

Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains in India and Nepal since last Monday have killed 187 people.

According to the news agency Reuters, torrential rains have wreaked havoc in India, killing at least 88 people, while recent rains in Nepal have so far confirmed 99 deaths.

Police in Nepal say rescue teams are searching for at least 40 people who are said to be missing, raising fears that the death toll could rise.

According to officials, most of the deaths occurred in the eastern and western parts of the country, where heavy rains fell this week. At least 35 people injured in the rains have been rescued and hospitalized.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba visited flood-affected areas in the western part of the country and directed the authorities to focus on immediate rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.

Floods and landslides triggered by this week’s rains in India have killed at least 46 people in the northern state of Uttarakhand and 42 in the southern state of Kerala.
