A San Antonio man is not expected to face charges after his car was stolen and a confrontation with the alleged thief ended in a deadly shootout on Wednesday, March 29, police said.

The man’s vehicle was stolen from his home on Wednesday afternoon. but using an Apple AirTag, he was able to track his vehicle to a mall.

The man called the police to report the stolen vehicle, but did not wait for the police to arrive to try to confront the alleged car thief.

Police said the man saw his vehicle in the parking lot and approached in an attempt to confront the person inside.

The victim of the car theft told police that she believed that the alleged burglar drew a gun, triggering “a shootout”.

Police said they currently believe the carjacking victim is the only person who fired, and cannot confirm whether more than one gun was found at the crime scene.

The alleged assailant, another male, was shot and pronounced dead. His identity was not provided. The robbery victim allegedly remained at the scene of the shooting, made herself available to the police and was detained for questioning. The shooter is not expected to face charges, but an investigation is ongoing.
