Magic is officially back in session! The highly anticipated HBO series bringing the beloved Harry Potter stories to a new generation has kicked off production. This exciting news means cameras are now rolling, ready to whisk viewers back to Hogwarts.
The network shared the big announcement on Instagram on Monday, July 14. Their message to fans was simple and direct: "First years, step forward." They confirmed that the original Harry Potter series is now actively being made.
Along with this update, HBO gave fans a sneak peek at the new Harry Potter. A photo showed newcomer Dominic McLaughlin in character. He wore the familiar Gryffindor robes and Harry’s signature round glasses. Even the famous lightning-bolt scar was visible on his forehead. McLaughlin offered a small smile as he held a clapperboard, marking the start of filming.
Dominic McLaughlin landed the lead role after an open audition. HBO searched for its new Golden Trio, which includes Harry, Ron, and Hermione, starting back in September 2024. Alastair Stout was chosen to play Ron Weasley. Arabella Stanton will bring Hermione Granger to life.
This new TV show will feature a completely fresh cast. The original films captivated audiences from 2001 to 2011. J.K. Rowling, the author of the best-selling Harry Potter books, is serving as an executive producer for the upcoming series. Her involvement brings a sense of continuity and authenticity.

Rowling shared her thoughts in an April 2023 statement. She noted that Max, the streaming service, is committed to respecting her books. She also expressed her eagerness to be part of the new show. She feels a long-form TV series can offer a level of detail and depth that the movies could not.
Familiar Faces Join the Cast
Beyond the new Golden Trio, other well-known actors have already signed on for roles. Earlier this year, it was revealed that veteran actor John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore. This is a highly anticipated casting choice.
Lithgow spoke to Screen Rant in February about taking on such an iconic character. He admitted it was not an easy decision. He even joked that it might define the last part of his career. However, he is very excited about the project. He mentioned that many talented people are focusing on Harry Potter again. Lithgow, who will be around 87 at the wrap party, happily confirmed he said yes to the role.
Other previously announced cast members include:
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell
- Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
More Character Reveals
The Monday production announcement also brought more casting news. Rory Wilmot was announced as the new Neville Longbottom. Amos Kitson will play Dudley Dursley, Harry’s much-maligned cousin. Louise Brealey is set to become Madam Rolanda Hooch. Anton Lesser will take on the role of Garrick Ollivander, the wand maker.
Fans should mark their calendars. The new Harry Potter series is set to premiere in 2027. The wizarding world awaits!
