The Mumbai Indians suffered a crushing 36-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday. This loss marked the first match for Hardik Pandya as the captain of Mumbai Indians in the 2025 IPL season. However, it was marred by a significant blunder that cost him dearly – a hefty fine of 12 lakh rupees.
The trouble began when the Mumbai Indians failed to complete their 20 overs on time, resulting in a penalty. According to the IPL, this was the team’s first offense of the season under the code of conduct 2.2. As a result, Hardik Pandya was slapped with the fine. This move was made in accordance with the IPL’s rules regarding slow over rates.
In a statement, the IPL said, “Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined for maintaining a slow over rate during their match against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.” The rules state that if a team fails to complete their overs within the given time, they will face penalties, including fines for the captain and the team.
Notably, this isn’t the first instance of a team facing penalties for slow over rates. Last season, Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals were guilty of this offense multiple times, resulting in Pant being banned for a match. Hardik Pandya had also committed a similar mistake, leading to his suspension from the first match of the 2025 IPL season. However, the IPL has since revised its rules, replacing the ban with a demerit points system.
