hard law, but it is law

A violation of the regulations costs Águilas Cibaeñas a victory that will become a defeat, according to a sentence from the baseball league, responding to a claim from the Licey.

Bitter failure, unsportsmanlike, but it is what the legislation dictates. A legal principle expresses: “the law is harsh, but it is the law.” It is difficult to accept that after obtaining a victory on the field thanks to the efforts of the players, it turns into a defeat due to an administrative failure, intentional or not.

It is not the first time that this has happened in Dominican baseball. One of the most shocking cases occurred in the 1991 Round Robin. It happened that on January 10 El Escogido defeated Licey five to one, but after the game the Tigers raised a claim stating that the pitcher used by the Reds, Greg Perschke, had been registered while still active in the Venezuelan league, violating the regulations. The sanction was the forfeiture of the game in favor of the claiming team, which was obviously the loser. On January 18, the president of Lidom, Juan Francisco Puello, welcomed the Licey protest in all its parts, confiscating the game in his favor and fining the Lions $200.00. They appealed that sentence before the commission created for these purposes made up of José Álvarez Saviñón, Porfirio Hernández Quezada and José Ureña; but this was ratified.

The consequences of the event harmed the Eagles more than the Chosen One because of the place they occupied in the standings. This caused the Cibaeño team, in protest, not to show up for the final game of the calendar against the Reds, losing it by forfeit. Paradoxically, Licey lost their last match against the Toros and if the Águilas had played and won the Chosen One there would have been a tie for second place between Cibaeños and the Blues, forcing an extra game to define who would face the Reds in the Series. Final.
