“Haq” Box Office Failure: Courtroom Drama Struggles to Recover $3M+ Budget

The film “Haq,” starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, continues its disappointing run at the box office. The courtroom drama recorded a further drop in earnings on its tenth day in theaters.

On its second Sunday, the film garnered only 98 lakh Indian Rupees, approximately $118,000 USD. This marks a continued downward trend for the feature.

After ten days, “Haq” has accumulated a total of 16.73 crore Indian Rupees, or roughly $2.01 million USD. This figure falls significantly short of the film’s estimated budget. Producers had set the budget between 25-30 crore Indian Rupees, approximately $3.01 million to $3.61 million USD.

The film’s opening was a modest 1.75 crore Indian Rupees (around $210,000 USD). Earnings then steadily declined during weekdays, reaching only 65 lakh Indian Rupees (about $78,000 USD) by its second Friday.

“Haq” faces stiff competition from other major releases. Ajay Devgn’s “De De Pyaar De 2” is currently performing well, drawing audiences to theaters. This further impacts “Haq’s” ability to secure box office traction.

The film is based on the notable Shah Bano case, a historical legal dispute regarding alimony after divorce. While Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi attempted to bring depth to their roles under director Suparn Varma, the serious subject matter appealed to a limited audience. The film also suffered from slow pacing, a weak screenplay, and insufficient promotion.
