Hamilton begins to worry

The most representative training sessions of the strange weekend in Hungary leave Hamilton with two and a half tenths of an advantage over the Red Bull. Verstappen (2nd, 0.250) speaks of a lack of grip to his engineers even though Pérez has made progress (3rd, 0.256). Among the unusual are Hulkenberg (4th, 0.266) and Norris (5th, 0.271) who already officially drives a big car. The two Ferraris are not so close (Leclerc was seventh and Sainz eighth, around four tenths) or Alonso, ninth after half a second. In summary, the time table is clarified and the Spanish are not in the front positions despite the supposed weakness of Max and his team, compared to other circuits. And that’s without mentioning the apparent equality offered by Alfa Romeo, Williams and company: in Free Practice 3 there are practically 19 drivers separated by just over a second.

Now the teams prepare for an atypical classification. In Q1 they must start with hard ones, to Q2 they will take medium ones and for Q3, soft ones. They have had to save sets of tires to maintain strategic options both in qualifying (at least two sets for each compound) and in the race (predictably two stops, because the Pirelli range is the softest). In addition, the rain on Friday cleaned the asphalt and the high temperatures bring the Hungaroring closer to normal conditions, which were not those of the first practice sessions. It will be a difficult weekend to analyze, without expectations. For now, though, Hamilton is starting to sound convincing after saying on Friday night that he’s gotten into the Mercedes “at its worst level” this season. “Although we will find something in the ‘set-up.” Well, they already have it.
