Haitians march in the United States to warn of the crisis in their country

Thousands of Haitians demonstrated this Sunday in Miami-Dade County as part of several international mobilizations to draw attention to the chaos and crime faced by their compatriots on the island.

With Haitian flags, dressed in white and signs against violence, the islanders walked from a North Miami school to the city hall of that city amid the heat wave facing much of the United States.

The mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, was present at the beginning of the demonstration, which was part of the international day “Relief For Haiti.”

With posters against the homicides and kidnappings, the Haitians asked the Joe Biden administration for help and clamored for peace in Miami, and also in Boston, when the two years after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, occurred on July 7, 2021.

The state of Florida has the largest number of Haitians in the United States, with nearly half a million, while the second largest concentration is in Massachusetts, with more than 80,000.

“I’m from Haiti. I used to go on vacation there; I can’t go on vacation anymore because it’s too scaryRoseline Joseph told Miami channel 7News.

“The worst thing right now in Haiti are the kidnappings,” said Jean Harold Noel.

The violence by gangs in Haiti reached levels not seen in decades by 2022, with a sharp increase in homicides (2,183) and kidnappings (1,359), more than double that of the previous year, according to UN data.

Last Wednesday the US government assured that it supports the Haitian government’s request to send a special multinational force to help the country.

During a meeting with the Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, gave his support to the proposal and reaffirmed the “urgency” of reaching a consensus that allows “reestablishing the democratic order” in the Caribbean country.
