Hacker steals more than $1.3 million in NFTs

A hacker has managed to steal dozens of NFTs from a single collector. Collectively, the NFTs had a value of more than €1.3 million.

Moonbirds Collection

It is reported that 29 NFTs from the popular Moonbirds collection have been stolen. These NFTs currently have a floor price of 24 Ethereum (ETH) each. The hacker apparently tricked the victim into approving them as the administrator of the wallet using a phishing website. Subsequently, all the NFTs were transferred to the perpetrator’s wallet.

The phishing website was set up with a smart contract, which the victim approved. He said the following:

On that site, the hacker had made a contract to de-nest all my Moonbirds and move them all at once. Initially, the transactions seemed to fail, but eventually they were pushed through.

Attempt to recover stolen NFTs

The victim is mourned by the cyber attack. He messaged the hacker in an attempt to recover the stolen NFTs. There is no answer to this yet. He said the following:

Return the stolen moonbirds to their original owner. Keep 1 for compensation. If the Moonbirds are not returned by 25/5 at 12pm UTC, the police and FBI will be formally notified.

Scams via phishing are unfortunately very common, also in the crypto world. Just one wrong click can send millions of dollars irreversibly to the wrong address. Such cyber attackers are also getting smarter about this. Fake (phishing) websites are therefore increasingly difficult to distinguish from real websites. It is therefore expected that this will certainly not be the last phishing hack.
