Norwegian striker Erling Haaland will play for Manchester City from next European season, according to speculation in the English press.
The sports portal The Athletic, in its British version, announced this Monday that Haaland’s transfer to the Spanish team Josep “Pep” Guardiola is “almost done”. Haaland’s departure from Borussia Dortmund would be through the termination clause set at 75 million euros and the official announcement could take place this week, according to the same medium, citing its own sources in Germany. The news generated a high impact in Europe since the young scorer, 21 years old, was on the radar of the most important clubs in the continent.
Barcelona was one of them and their coach Xavi Hernández was consulted at a press conference about the news. “I’m not going to disrespect other projects but if that happens (if he chooses City) it will be for a financial issue. I have no doubts,” said the former Catalan midfielder.
Haaland has been playing for Dortmund since January 2020 after passing through Austria’s Salzburg, and his goalscoring ability quickly caught the attention of the football world. In the Bundesliga, the Norwegian has scored 61 goals in 66 games, while in the Champions League he scored 23 goals in 19 games. In total, with the yellow shirt of Borussia Dortmund he has 85 celebrations in 88 appearances, with an average that is close to one goal per game. This season, despite suffering from various muscle problems, the 194-centimetre-tall striker scored 28 goals in 29 games.
In the event of his signing, Haaland will be a teammate of Julián Álvarez, who from July will join the ranks of the team led by Pep Guardiola. In the current season, the only natural center forward for City is the Brazilian Gabriel Jesús, since the rest of the attacking positions are occupied by the Spanish coach with attacking midfielders.
