The true story behind Gwyneth Paltrow’s split from Madonna is finally coming to light. A new book spills the beans on what truly ended their long-standing friendship.
The upcoming biography, ‘Gwyneth: The Biography,’ by author Amy Odell, claims Paltrow reached her breaking point. This happened when Madonna unexpectedly showed up on the same island where Paltrow was vacationing. At the time, Paltrow was with her then-husband, Chris Martin. The couple had been married for over ten years before they separated in 2014.
“Madonna seemed to know Gwyneth would be there,” a friend recalled in an excerpt shared by People on Wednesday, July 16. “Gwyneth found this very strange.” The book goes on to say that Madonna then insisted Paltrow and Martin join her for a big dinner. At this long table, Madonna reportedly took out her anger on her daughter, Lourdes. Paltrow and Martin were deeply uncomfortable with Madonna’s behavior.
Martin, it seems, did not hold back. He reportedly called Madonna “horrible” after the incident. He also declared he “could no longer be around that woman.” Paltrow agreed completely. It was at this point that she officially “ended the friendship.”
Paltrow, now 52, and Madonna, 66, first became friends in the late 1990s. Before rumors of their rift began, Paltrow often spoke highly of the music icon. In 2006, Paltrow once shared, “Everything I’ve been through, she went through ten times worse and for ten times longer.” She added, “She gives me good advice on how to say no and take care of myself.”
For years, it’s been widely reported that the two stars had a falling out. The exact date of the incident described in Odell’s book isn’t clear. However, neither Paltrow nor Madonna have been photographed together since 2010.
Paltrow herself seemed to hint at the breakup during a British Vogue interview in April 2010. She mentioned her business partner and celebrity trainer, Tracy Anderson, during the conversation.

“Yes, it’s good that [Tracy] doesn’t train Madonna anymore. It was just too much,” Paltrow stated during that interview. She explained that Madonna “makes people wait, takes your whole day.” Reports from the entertainment magazine Us Weekly in June 2010 further confirmed that Paltrow and Madonna “don’t speak anymore.” A source reportedly told the outlet that Gwyneth “can be jealous and competitive.” Neither star has publicly shared more details about their rumored distance.
‘Gwyneth: The Biography’ is set to hit shelves on July 29.
