Groenewegen triumphs for Jayco-AlUla in his second home

The Jayco-AlUla team can already boast of having achieved victories in both of their houses at the beginning of the season. After Simon Yates achieved victory in the fifth stage of the Tour Down Under, this Monday the Australian team with Saudi co-sponsor shone in the first stage of the Saudi Tour, where the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen took victory to become the first overall leader.

On this opening day of 180 kilometres, the leading role fell for a large part of the day on the escape formed by Marcus Sander Hansen, Peio Goikoetxea, Aaron Van der Beken, Alessandro Iacchi, Muhamad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff and Kosuke Takeyama, who came to have up to 5:20 margin over the peloton. A breakaway that, 60 kilometers from the finish line, was broken and in which Hansen and Goikoetxea were the last to resist before the Spaniard was forced to give up due to fatigue.

The constant work of Jayco-AlUla in the peloton paid off when, 13 kilometers from the finish line, the large group caught up with Hansen, so the victory would end up being decided in a sprint in which the Jayco-AlUla train was much better and where a great throw from Luka Mezgec allowed Dylan Groenewegen to prevail in the sprint against Dusan Rajovic and Max Walscheid to achieve the second victory of the year for Jayco AlUla in his second home. This Tuesday, a second opportunity for the sprinters in a 184-kilometre journey between Winter Park and Shalal Sijlyat Rocks.
