Former Benfica captain Alex Grimaldo, now leading Bayer Leverkusen, has openly expressed a potential future return to the Portuguese club, highlighting his strong relationship with President Rui Costa.
“In football, anything can happen,” Grimaldo stated following his team’s Champions League victory over Benfica. “I have a very good relationship with the president, Rui Costa. I really like Benfica, and something can always happen, but in the future, we’ll see.”
Grimaldo’s comments came after he captained Bayer Leverkusen to a 1-0 win against his former side during the fourth matchday of the Champions League. The defender returned to the Estádio da Luz, where he previously spent seven seasons.
He praised Benfica’s current form, predicting they would win the championship. “They are playing very well now. Today they played a great game. They have been playing very well in recent games, not conceding and scoring many goals.”
“Yes, of course, I always support Benfica from Germany,” Grimaldo added, noting he follows their games online or on TV when possible. “I know they are fighting for the championship, as always, and I believe they will win it.”
Reflecting on the match, Grimaldo described it as very difficult for Leverkusen. “In the first half, we couldn’t press, and they got out easily. But we had our chances.”
Patrik Schick scored the winning goal for Leverkusen in the second half. Grimaldo also mentioned a late scoring opportunity he had. “It was the last play, I was already very tired. It was difficult to score, but I’m happy with the victory.”
