The Environmental activist Greta Thunberg will take part in a protest against the construction of a highway in southwestern France on Saturday, organizers said, although the demonstration was banned.
“We are pleased to announce that a national and international delegation of climate activists will be present this weekend (…). We confirm that Greta Thunberg will accompany us,” said the No Macadam collective.
Activists reject the controversial construction of the A69 motorway between the cities of Toulouse and Castres.
“This allows us to take the fight against the A69 to the international and national levels and political leaders must measure their stubbornness,” the group added.
Opponents of the A69 will hold environmental awareness days on Saturday and Sunday, taking place on private forest land that is being litigated over its expropriation due to motorway construction.
The operation “enabled the dismantling of the trap barricades installed, the confiscation of the various materials intended for the construction of the cabins and the restoration of order,” the authorities stated.
The A69 motorway project, which is intended to promote connectivity to a rural area, is dividing the political class and is encountering strong resistance from environmentalists, who have demonstrated there several times in recent months.
