Gregoire leads France’s party at the junior Europeans

The Frenchman Romain Gregoire has been proclaimed this Friday as the new European road champion in the junior category. Gregoire managed to sneak into the final lap in a small group that the peloton could not hunt down and that would eventually end up handing out the medals.

For much of the race, and despite numerous attempts at attacks, the peloton rolled tightly until the start of the final two laps, when the rhythm grew with the movements of Portugal and other countries that left the peloton reduced to 50 units in the last 10 kilometers.

On the last climb to Povo, the Norwegian Hagenes and the French Martínez and Romain Gregoire managed to jump and open a gap of 12 seconds with 2 kilometers to go in search of the medals. A distance that they managed to maintain to distribute the medals among themselves in the final sprint, where Gregoire was faster to take the European gold ahead of Hagenes, silver, and Martinez, who had to settle for bronze, while the squad came within 10 seconds of Gregoire.

Regarding the Spanish representatives Pau Martí was the best classified in 25th place after arriving in a peloton that also included Hugo Aznar (29th) and Iván Romeo (33rd). while Xabier Zabala finished in 66th place and Rubén Sánchez in 76th position. Haimar Etxeberria was the only one of the Spanish cyclists who could not finish the test due to mechanical problems.
