Government Boosts Pet ID System with $325,000 to Combat Abandonment

Portugal’s government has allocated an additional $326,000 to enhance its electronic animal registration system, aiming to intensify efforts against pet abandonment. The funding was approved as part of the detailed voting on the State Budget for 2026.

This financial reinforcement is specifically designated to improve the national identification system for companion animals. Authorities view this system as a primary tool in combating the widespread issue of animal abandonment across the country.

The measure stems from the partial approval of an amendment proposed by Portugal’s Socialist Party. The original proposal sought broader support for official animal collection centers and national sterilization campaigns.

However, only the sub-item focusing on increased funding for the electronic registration system ultimately received parliamentary endorsement.
