Google named its doodle after the Emirati poetess

Google named its doodle after Emirati poet Awsha Al Suwaidi.

Arab News According to the Internet world’s largest search engine, Google paid tribute to Emirati poetess Awsha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi on her doodle.

The doodle depicts a female poet in traditional dress from the Arab region, with her face covered in a typical Bedouin style, an initiative by Google to encourage women in literature in the Arab region.

Awsha al-Suwaidi, nicknamed Fatah al-Khalij (Girl of the Gulf), is known among the nomadic Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula for traditional poetry, as well as for writing excellent poems and ghazals.

Born in Al Ain on January 1, 1920, Awsha al-Swaidi rose to national prominence at the age of 15, at a time when literature in the region was generally dominated by men.

Many of the Emirati poet’s poems seem to be inspired by the Arabian Gulf and desert landscapes, as well as her own experiences in the UAE, based on themes such as love, wisdom, patriotism and nostalgia.

Many of Awsha’s poems have been used in songs by famous Emirati and Arab artists, and in 2011 her services were recognized nationally, with an annual award in her name. Awsha Al Suwaidi died in 2018 at the age of 98.
