Google Maps Gets Minimalist Battery Saver Mode for Navigation

Google Maps is preparing to launch a new, minimalist power-saving mode designed to significantly reduce smartphone battery drain during navigation, addressing a common user frustration.

Evidence of this new functionality has been discovered within the APK of the latest beta version of Google Maps for Android. The mode features a stark black and white, minimalist design.

When activated, the navigation screen continues to display directions but with a much more limited interface compared to the standard view. The application’s appearance restricts itself to the basic map layer against a black background.

Streets are rendered in gray, with the navigation route highlighted in white. The primary navigation bar remains visible at the top of the screen.

The bottom of the display shows total travel time, distance, and the estimated arrival time, all adapted to the new, darker, and smaller design. Most other interface components are removed to prolong battery life.

This includes report buttons, the compass, the search bar, and sound controls. However, audio instructions will reportedly remain unchanged.

This simple interface change aims to provide a definitive solution for a common issue, especially for users on long drives whose vehicles lack Android Auto compatibility. Battery depletion during extended navigation is a frequent complaint.

The power-saving mode is not limited to driving routes. It also functions for travel by two-wheelers, such as bicycles and motorcycles, and for walking directions.

In walking mode, the application reportedly abandons its black and white aesthetic, instead displaying the route with traditional blue dots. It is not yet clear if this design is final or subject to change before its public release.

Curiously, the power-saving feature may not be activated through an on-screen option. Code within the beta suggests it could be toggled by pressing the phone’s power button while navigation is active, though this could change in settings.

Observations from the beta indicate that the power-saving mode currently only works in portrait orientation. Users who typically navigate with their phone in landscape mode may not be able to utilize this option.

Google has not yet provided a timeline for when this new feature will be made available to all users.
