Google Maps can give an ultimatum to Android and iOS users

The Google Maps service is essential for traveling, especially with its step-by-step navigation, with voice commands and guides that help us reach our destination. It is the application sine qua non we ventured into a new city, both on Android and iOS.

This same Google Maps application for mobile devices is now receiving an update that, after installation, presents a new screen (new righ now) with information on the importance of the data shared by users with Google.

The Google Maps service is one of the most useful services provided by Google.

More specifically, the new information screen presents the justification for collecting opinions, actions and feedback overview of users on Google Maps. The American company classifies it as absolutely essential for the usefulness of the service.

The notice will allow Google to continue to use the data and metrics provided by users to improve its service. In addition, it will allow you to continue using the detailed navigation instructions, also known as turn-by-turn navigation.

So don’t be surprised if you see a new context window that pops up the next time you open the Google Maps app. Either in the application for Android or iOS, depending on the publication 9to5Google, the warning is displayed.

Is this notice finalized on Google Maps?

The issue was raised by the aforementioned publication, which, among other things, establishes that the non-acceptance of the user’s data collection, step-by-step navigation will be suspended. However, keep in mind that the publication refers to the North American reality.

If this also applied in Europe, we would indeed have an ultimatum. That is, if the user did not grant Google permission to collect the comments and information entered by the user, we would not have detailed navigation.

Above we can see an example of the notice that is in circulation in the North American region. At the moment, however, we are not aware of its presentation in Europe and nations covered by the GDPR.

The notice also states that “while we travel, Google collects data such as the GPS location and the route chosen by the user. This data can be used to generate information such as real-time traffic warnings and possible accidents. Information visible to other users who can help them find the fastest route. These map updates are not associated with the user account, Google account, or device. “

Google needs a lot of data to improve Maps

Warnings such as real-time traffic information effectively lack this type of user-submitted data and automatically collected information. In case, by chance, the user does not give them, the Maps may become poorer.

By the way, as the aforementioned publication warns, in cases where the user refuses to provide said data, step-by-step navigation will be disabled. Again, this is happening in the North American region, for the moment exclusively.

On the other hand, the notice is now being distributed to Google Maps Android and iOS users.

Finally, if you have received a similar notice in Europe, please leave your testimonial below in the comments.
